NEW YORK — Which sports teams are taking advantage in 2018 of a free phone call program that is meant to boost revenue?
If you’re wondering, the answer is a little bit of both.
The NBA, NHL and NFL have all said they plan to open phone lines and offer free calls, and there are more than a dozen other teams that have announced they will offer the service.
A few of the more noteworthy teams are the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Here’s a rundown of which team is taking advantage, in no particular order:Atlanta Braves (free phone) The Braves are the most popular sports team in the United States.
It’s easy to see why.
In fact, in 2014, the Braves were the most successful team in American professional sports history.
According to Forbes, they earned $14.6 billion in revenues in 2016, the most recent year for which figures are available.
Their revenue was up nearly 60% from the year before and has continued to rise as the Braves’ ownership group has expanded over the years.

Boston Celtics (free call) The Boston Celtics were the first team to launch the free phone program in 2014.
Boston’s owner, Red Sox owner John Henry, has made it clear that he wants to see the franchise thrive, and the team is now planning to open a free telephone line for fans to call their team.
When a fan calls to check on the health of the team, they can get a free call with the team and a representative will also be available to answer questions.
“When fans call and ask questions, we’ll answer them on the phone,” a spokesman for the team told ESPN.
So far, the team has opened free phone lines in Boston, San Francisco and Miami, and they are currently recruiting members for more free phone services.
Cleveland Cavaliers (free telephone) The Cavaliers have a loyal following that are willing to pay extra for access to their games.
As of September 2018, the Cavaliers have more than 200,000 Twitter followers, which is a lot for a team that has only reached the top 10 in Twitter followers once in the last year.
They’ve also opened their Facebook page, which has over 890,000 likes and over 2.2 million views, and added a Twitter account in September.
The team also recently launched a new Twitter account, which now has over 1.4 million followers.
Charlotte Hornets (free telephones) The Charlotte Hornets have made it a point to open their free telephone lines for fans, and it looks like they are finally going to be adding another.
Earlier this month, the Hornets announced they would offer a free telephone service to fans that could reach their team in New Orleans and Memphis, Tenn.
After reaching their first three markets in 2018, they plan on expanding to the rest of the Southeast and beyond this year.
The NBA is also looking to expand the number of free telephones available, as it is trying to reach more fans across the country.
The league has been working to expand free telephone services to new markets like Atlanta and Cincinnati, and a spokesperson told ESPN that there will be an expansion of the program for 2018.
